The confirmation made by President Lula that he will nominate lawyer Cristiano Zanin for the open vacancy in the STF was well received by the ministers of the Supreme Court.

Approached by journalists, Minister Luiz Fux said he considered the choice made by the President of the Republic to be “excellent”. Minister Nunes Marques, appointed by Jair Bolsonaro, called Zanin’s choice “great”.

Luís Roberto Barroso stated that Zanin is a “serious and competent” lawyer, who has shown dedication to the client even “in the face of adversity”.

“The Doctor. Cristiano Zanin acted with high professional quality in cases that were processed before the Supreme Court. My view of him is that of a serious and competent attorney who has exhibited client dedication and ethical conduct even in the face of adversity. For my part, it will be very welcome, ”he said.

Gilmar Mendes, minister with more time in the STF, classified the nomination as “positive”. “It was a positive indication, I think he is a qualified person. So, he will fit in well with the court”, said Gilmar.

Minister André Mendonça, another nominee by former President Jair Bolsonaro, wished the lawyer “success” on the path he will have to take in the Senate to be approved.

Mendonça said he believes that Zanin has the requirements to take over the vacancy. “I want to wish you success on the path [sabatina] in the Senate. I believe he [Zanin] meets all criteria and requirements to be part of this court [STF]”, these.

Zanin was Lula’s personal lawyer in the Lava Jato operation. His nomination to the Supreme Court provoked a reaction from Bolsonarists, including Senator Sergio Moro (União Brasil-SP), who was a judge of the operation and condemned Lula in the first instance. The sentence was later overturned following the findings that Moro acted in collusion with the Public Ministry to convict Lula without evidence.

Graduated in Law from the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (PUC-SP), Zanin was specialized in Procedural Law and worked in Business Law, especially in complex disputes and large cases of judicial recovery.

His victories in the defense of Lula, however, projected him as one of the main names in Brazilian law in the last five years.

With the convictions annulled by the STF in admittedly difficult causes, Lula was able to run again and assume his third term as president of the Republic.

Zanin is now 47 years old, which means he could serve for 28 years on the Court, until his mandatory retirement at age 75.

Despite being young, he is not the youngest minister to be appointed and meets all the requirements determined by the Constitution as necessary for the nomination, says specialist in constitutional and administrative law Wallace Corbo, professor of law at the Getúlio Vargas Foundation (FGV- RJ) and the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ).

In its Article 12, the Federal Constitution determines that the Justices of the Supreme Court must be chosen among “citizens over 35 and under 70 years old”, with “remarkable legal knowledge” and “unblemished reputation”.

“In recent years he (Zanin) has established himself as one of the most well-known lawyers in the country and has been very successful in cases that were hopeless.
