(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Dae-ho Kim = The auxiliary battery of a mobile phone being charged suddenly exploded in the middle of the night, sparks flew up and the sleeping couple suffered severe burns.

However, it was identified as a problem as the battery sellers were not communicating well until a week after the accident, and were struggling to deal with the accident.

In particular, it was revealed that users continued to raise problems such as heat and swelling through reviews after using the product, and the company was also aware of the risk of explosion and fire, causing a debate over moral hazard.

A man in his 30s living in Icheon-si, Gyeonggi-do, was sleeping around 3:30 in the morning on the 21st of last month when he suddenly heard a ‘pop’, woke up and looked around, and found a flame in get up in the living room. Upon closer inspection, the auxiliary battery caught fire, and in an instant the sofa caught fire and burned along the living room wall.

He didn’t even have time to call 911 and immediately used a pillow to put out the fire, but it took several minutes to completely extinguish the fire.

Person A suffered second degree burns to the thigh and leg from the fire in the battery, and his wife, who was sleeping near the battery, was diagnosed with second degree burns to both fingers, back of hand, and wrist at immediately after the accident he can’t do it A newborn baby, who was sleeping in the middle of the couple, just over 80 days ago, also inhaled the toxic gas from the battery fire.

If you look at the photo taken by Mr. A immediately after the accident, the wide battery inflated like a balloon, and the internal parts of the battery exploded and completely scattered and melted. The couch where the battery was placed was also badly burned, and black soot formed on the walls. Other household items such as air purifiers and mobile phones were also damaged, so the material damage was not small.

However, Company D, who sold the battery, was consistent with its irresponsible and irresponsible response. Company D is a small and medium-sized company with annual sales of 10 to 20 billion won.

Company D responded to Mr. And through the customer center initially, but the phone was not connected well and the accident was left to the insurance company. Until the 28th, Mr A didn’t even get a basic answer on why the battery exploded, why he was selling it despite the fear of an explosion, and how to compensate for the damage.

A dual income couple is unable to work because they go to a fire hospital in Suwon for treatment.

The battery in question was a product developed and manufactured by a Chinese manufacturer (ODM), imported by Company D to Korea and sold with the safety certification of the National Integrated Certification Mark (KC). Company D was aware of the problem by analyzing the cause of a similar fire in a battery in July. Also, if you look at the product reviews, “Smoke is coming out, but there is no contact with the company” “The heat is too bad. If I had charged it without knowing it, it would have caught on fire “” Smoke comes out when charging and the smell of burning plastic doesn’t go away. I’m afraid of fire.” Concerns about the danger continued. To these concerns, Company D responded only like a parrot, “I will try to repay you with a better service by referring to valuable reviews.” Just last July, they contacted some users and took measures to exchange old products, but there was no solution to the underlying problem.

Person A said, “The company sold the product even though it knew the dangers of the product. Moreover, if a product that even received KC certification exploded, who should the consumer trust? Company D is unethical and the product is defective, so it should be expelled, hopefully it will get worse,” he said.

He said he had reported Company D to the Korea Product Safety Management Agency. The Product Safety Management Agency can take measures such as product recall orders, negligence, and criminal prosecution after an accident investigation on KC-certified products.

Company D said, “It was manufactured according to KC certification standards, and there is a possibility that the overheating prevention part inside the battery is defective.

An official from the certification body said, “If the KC certified battery exploded, there could be various causes, but the most likely cause was that the manufacturer produced the product differently from the standard when it was certified, ” he said.
