Opposition Parties Rally in Seoul to Condemn Release of Fukushima Contaminated Water

On the afternoon of the 9th, leaders from four opposition parties, including the Democratic Party of Korea, the Justice Party, the Basic Income Party, and the Progressive Party, gathered in downtown Seoul to denounce the discharge of radioactive contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan. Dubbed as the “National Rally to Stop the Dumping of Fukushima Nuclear Contaminated Water into the Ocean and Condemn the Seok-yeol Yoon Government,” the event took place in Gwanghwamun, Seoul. It was organized jointly with the “Joint Action to Stop the Dumping of Radioactive Contaminated Water into the Sea in Japan,” which saw participation from around 90 municipal groups.

According to police estimates, approximately 2,000 people gathered around the Gwanghwamun intersection in Jongno-gu, Seoul at 4 pm on the 9th. This was a significant decrease in attendance compared to the first convention held on the 26th of last month, which saw 7,000 attendees, and the second convention held on the 2nd of this month, which had 6,000 participants.

Notable figures from the Democratic Party, including floor leader Park Kwang-on, Park Chan-dae, and Seo Young-kyo, were present at the rally. However, CEO Lee Jae-myeong, who was being investigated by the Suwon District Prosecutor’s Office in relation to the Ssangbangwool Group’s alleged payments to North Korea, was absent.

During the event, floor leader Park took the stage and expressed his disappointment, saying, “We demanded that they cease the dumping of contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear plant into the ocean, but they ultimately turned a blind eye, even using our own money to promote it as safe.” He further added, “This clearly demonstrates the people’s dissatisfaction with Yoon Seok-yeol’s administration, as the people always prevail. Let us keep fighting.”

Bae Jin-kyo, the floor leader of the Justice Party, likened the situation to the era of military dictatorships under Park Chung-hee and Chun Doo-hwan, suggesting that the current government and ruling party should introduce legislation to penalize the dissemination of misinformation about contaminated water.

Former Progressive Party leader Lee Sang-gyu launched a scathing attack, stating, “It’s not just that Yoon Seok-yeol’s regime has a Japanese influence; Yoon Seok-yeol is inherently Japanese,” and urging all opposition parties to unite and work together to compel the resignation of the Yoon Seok-yeol government.
