Karachi: Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif of Pakistan has established a high-powered committee to deliberate on Pakistan’s participation in the upcoming World Cup cricket match in India. Chaired by External Affairs Minister Bilwal Bhutto, the committee’s primary objective is to evaluate the existing circumstances and determine the final decision regarding Pakistan’s involvement in the tournament. As the Patron of Pakistan Cricket, the Prime Minister will be informed of the committee’s ultimate conclusion.
The committee aims to thoroughly analyze the current relationship between India and Pakistan, address policy concerns pertaining to separating sporting events from the government’s political stance, and evaluate the security situation for players, team officials, fans, and the media when visiting India for the matches. The committee will subsequently communicate its final decision to the Prime Minister, following which Pakistan’s participation in the World Cup will be formally decided.
The committee members comprise Sports Minister Ashan Masari, Maryam Aurangzeb, Azad Mahmood, Amin ul Haq, Qumar Zaman Kaira, and former diplomat Tariq Fatmi.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have already released the World Cup schedule, with Pakistan expected to be one of the participating nations.
The Pakistan Cricket Board firmly believes that the national team can only travel to India for the World Cup if the government grants permission after assessing the prevailing political climate between the two countries. To evaluate the security situation in India, Pakistan recently dispatched a high-level security team, which inspected the venues where the Pakistani team will be playing.
