Pan-ministerial PIM artificial intelligence semiconductor project launched… 400 billion investment by 2028

Developing next generation semiconductor technology that even does calculations in memory

The Ministry of Science and ICT and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy held a launch ceremony for the pan-ministerial ‘PIM Artificial Intelligence Semiconductor Project Group’ at the Pangyo Startup Campus in Seongnam-si, Gyeonggi-do on the 29th.

The PIM artificial intelligence semiconductor is a ‘memory and computation integrated intelligent semiconductor’, and is a next-generation semiconductor technology expected to increase efficiency by performing memory operations that store data.

‘PIM’ is an abbreviation of ‘Processing-In-Memory’, which means ‘processing operations in memory’.

The Ministry of Science and ICT and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy will start the ‘PIM artificial intelligence semiconductor core technology development project’ this year and will invest KRW 42.7 billion in the total cost of the project, including KRW 289.7 billion from the Ministry of Science and ICT and KRW 113 billion from the Ministry of Industry, for seven years until 2028. did.

The business of the Ministry of Science and ICT includes the development of PIM-specialized devices and integration technologies, various memory-based PIM designs, and system software optimized for PIM semiconductors.

The Ministry of Science and ICT established a dedicated organization within the Institute for Information and Communication Planning and Evaluation (IITP) in July this year to manage the project and began operating the project group.

The project group promotes not only business planning during the project period but also the interconnection of technologies by field, and supports related domestic semiconductor conglomerates, fabless, universities and performers to strengthen cooperation.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by experts such as Professor Deok-gyun Jeong from Seoul National University, AI Semiconductor Forum Chairman Park Young-joon, Semiconductor Engineering Chairman Lee Yun-sik, PIM Artificial Intelligence Semiconductor Project Team Director Oh Yun -je, Intelligent Next Generation Semiconductor Business Group Director Kim Hyung-joon, Information and Communication Policy Director Song Sang-hoon at the Ministry of Science and ICT, and Kim Jong-seok Information and Communication Technology Institute Planning and Evaluation Head of the Sub- department of Nano and Semiconductors, National Research Institute of Korea, Kim Deok-gi attended the event.

As a side event of the inauguration ceremony, a technology exchange meeting was held to connect all technology fields, such as the new PIM artificial intelligence semiconductor device, design innovation foundation, and memory manufacturing process.

Song Sang-hoon, Minister of Information and Communications Policy at the Ministry of Science and ICT, said, “The development of PIM artificial intelligence semiconductor core technology is a key task for Korea’s digital strategy to realize the ‘New York Initiative’ (President Yoon Seok-yeol) .It will be an important step for us to move forward into a comprehensive semiconductor powerhouse.”
