As the police conduct a search and fit on the 21st to investigate the cause of the fire at the SK C&C Pangyo Data Center (SK Pangyo Campus), attention is focused on whether there are any abnormal signs before the fire. Due to a data center fire that occurred on the 15th of this month, most of Kakao’s services, such as KakaoTalk, known as ‘people’s messenger’, were disabled for more than 24 hours, and the entire nation suffered inconvenience.

According to the Bundang Police Station in Gyeonggi Province on the 22nd, the police sent about 10 investigators to the server room and business building of SK C&C SK Pangyo Campus in Sampyeong-dong, Bundang-gu, Seongnam-si, Gyeonggi-do the day before and conducted a search and seizure.

This search was conducted on lithium-ion batteries, a battery management system (BMS) that diagnoses the state of the battery in real time, and a server.

It is known that the Bundang Police Department has teamed up with the cyber investigation department of the Gyeonggi Nambu Police Agency, a higher-level agency, to join the raid for professionalism, unlike the usual raids that secure documents from the raid stage and search

The police are said to be paying attention to the situation of the fire, which was captured in the internal CCTV footage of around six minutes. In the video, the fire started after a spark occurred in the battery just before the fire, and the automatic fire extinguishing system was operating normally and halogen gas was injected.

Police are said to have obtained BMS records to check the condition of the battery before firing.

According to SK C&C and others, the BMS graph of estimated lithium-ion batteries was reported to have occurred in a stable state until 3:19 pm on the 15th, the time of the fire. When an abnormality occurs, an alarm goes off in the control room, etc., but there was no such fact.

However, the police are in a position to carefully secure and examine data stored in BMS and center servers. In addition, data on battery inspection history and safety management will also be seized and investigated.

There were no injuries, but the server power was cut off that day, causing problems with services such as Kakao and Naver which moved to the data center. Some services, such as shopping search, were disrupted by Naver, but were normalized at 9:30pm on the same day.
