The tomb of the late former Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon was moved to the Democratic Martyr’s Cemetery at Moran Park in Maseok, Namyangju, Gyeonggi Province, in the early morning of the 1st.
The tomb of Mayor Park was located in Changnyeong-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do, and the burial took place early in the morning. The bereaved family and supporters gathered in the afternoon to hold a memorial service.
Originally, the bereaved families of former Mayor Park tried to move the grave of Mayor Park to Moran Park around 3:00 pm on the same day, but they proceeded faster than this.
Mayor Park was buried in his hometown of Changnyeong, South Gyeongsang Province, but the following year, a man in his 20s damaged the tomb of former Mayor Park, and it is known that the bereaved family decided to bury him.
Previously, a controversy arose over whether it was correct to relocate the grave of former Mayor Park to Moran Park. Moran Park Cemetery is the place where the graves of 150 democratic and labor activists, including martyr Jeon Tae-yeol and former lawmaker Roh Hoe-chan, are buried, and is considered one of the representative democratic martyr cemeteries in Korea. As the news spread that former mayor Park, who had the mistake of perpetrating sexual violence, would be enshrined in the grave of a martyr for democracy, it was pointed out that “discrimination against women, violence and gender equality are not on the agenda in the democratization movement.”
The tomb of former mayor Park is behind the tomb of martyr Jeon Tae-il.
