The Pittsburgh team is not ‘participating’ due to surgical history

‘Big League’ Choi Ji-man (Pittsburgh Pirates) failed to participate in the 2023 World Baseball Classic (WBC).

The Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) said on the 6th, “Choi Ji-hoon was unable to participate in the WBC due to his team’s opposition.”

Originally, the KBO Technical Committee included Choi Ji-man, a first baseman who plays in the American Major League Baseball (MLB), in the final list of 30 players.

However, Pittsburgh notified the WBC Organizing Committee of ‘objection to participation’ due to Choi Ji-man’s history of surgery.

The organizing committee held an injury review committee to consider whether or not Choi Ji-man should be allowed to participate in the WBC, and presented the results to the KBO on the 5th.

The KBO said, “We prepared for a difficult situation where Ji-man Choi joined,” and “we selected Choi Ji-hoon as an additional player through review.”

The national team plans to present the final application including Choi Ji-hoon to the WBC Organizing Committee on the 8th.
