In the future, the demand for compensation for the purchase of Korean weapons is expected to grow.

(Seoul = Yonhap News) Correspondent Kim Seung-wook = It is known that Poland, which introduced a large number of domestic weapons such as the K2 tank, K9 self-propelled gun, and FA-50 light attack aircraft last year, is promoting joint research and development of a ‘wheeled armored vehicle’ with Korea.

Wheeled armored vehicles refer to infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) that move on wheels like normal cars, unlike tracked tanks.

According to the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) on the 10th, officials from the DAPA visited Poland late last month and met with officials from the state-owned defense industry group PGZ. As a result, it was reported that PGZ is considering new joint research and development of the Korean K808 ‘Baekho’ wheeled armored vehicle.

Initially, in July last year, when a general contract was signed with Poland to export 1,000 K2 tanks, the K808 was also included in the purchase items from Poland.

However, in the recent direct presentation of the K808, the airflow was found to turn to joint research and development of a new armored vehicle with Korea.

An official from the DAPA said, “The general contract is at the level of having an intention to buy, and it can be seen that it has become a real contract only when an operating contract has been signed.”

On September 16, 2021, the K808 wheeled armored vehicle, put into the Army’s Tiger 4.0 combat experiment unveiled at the training ground of the Army Combat Scientific Training Center (KCTC) in Inje, Gangwon-do, moves into the enemy camp .

Our military is also pursuing a performance improvement project for the K808.

Earlier this month, the Defense Acquisition Program Administration announced a project cost analysis service for improving the performance of wheeled armored vehicles.

This project is a project to re-install a remote fire control system (RCWS) and improve the performance of the command and control system to increase the surveillance and strike capabilities of the K808, to ensure combatant survivability and to improve command and control capabilities.

Previously, the crew had to go outside the armored vehicle to fire the machine gun, but when the RCWS is installed, the machine gun can be safely fired from inside the armored vehicle .

Here, to improve the command and control system, a next-generation multi-function radio, a ‘tactical multi-purpose multi-band radio’ (TMMR) and a ‘battalion-level combat command system’ (B2CS) will be installed, and a plan to add terminals battlefield and side cameras is being investigated. .

The K808 has been in service in the Korean army since 2018, carrying two crew members and 10 infantry, and is armed with a K4 high-speed grenade machine gun or a K6 heavy machine gun.

Its top speed is 100 km/h, and it can drive at more than 48 km/h even if the tires are damaged by installing tactical tires.

On the other hand, with the future introduction of South Korea’s weapons, Poland’s demand for trade offsets is expected to grow.

The Polish side reportedly suggested to officials at the DAPA that they bought South Korean weapons systems without compromising on trade last year because of the growing threat of a Russian attack on the Ukraine, but that they could go ahead with trade compromises in the future .

Countervailing trade is conditional trade that requires a certain amount of return when buying goods or services from a foreign country, and includes the purchase of goods and services from the buying country, technology transfer, and local production.

In addition, EU countries, such as Germany and France, are pushing to acquire weapon systems only within the EU, so it seems necessary to prepare countermeasures for this.
