POSCO E&C is firmly positioning itself in the future of the new and renewable growth industry. The company announced on the 23rd that it has signed a strategic agreement with Equinor, a global leader in offshore wind power generation based in Norway, to promote the groundbreaking ‘Ulsan Firefly’ project. This project aims to establish the world’s largest floating offshore wind power complex.
Under this agreement, POSCO E&C, formerly known as POSCO E&C, will establish a close partnership with Equinor, the Norwegian state energy company, in various areas including development planning, construction, and transportation.
The ‘Ulsan Firefly’ offshore wind power project is an ambitious undertaking that involves building a 750 megawatt (MW) offshore wind power station 70 kilometers away from Ulsan Port. The sheer magnitude of this project means it will be capable of supplying electricity to every home in Ulsan Metropolitan City. Equinor has expressed high expectations for the growth potential of the offshore wind business in Korea.
Utilizing its expertise in construction technology within the offshore wind energy field, POSCO E&C plans to construct the world’s largest commercial floating offshore wind energy complex off the coast of Ulsan. In fact, the company has been working on the concept of an onshore transmission line since January of this year.
Ar Sang-woong, the head of POSCO E&C’s infrastructure business department, expressed optimism for the future of the company’s offshore wind energy business, stating, “By choosing environmentally friendly and renewable businesses such as offshore wind energy as the next generation growth industry, we aim to break away from the constraints of the traditional construction industry. We believe this collaboration with Equinor will serve as a new inflection point for our offshore wind energy business, and we are committed to achieving its success by leveraging our full capabilities.”
Furthermore, POSCO E&C has been accelerating its offshore wind power business by partnering with DNV, Norway’s largest international offshore wind power certification body, in April for technical cooperation.
This strategic agreement with Equinor solidifies POSCO E&C’s position in the global offshore wind power market and highlights their commitment to driving sustainable and renewable energy development.
