POSCO, Li-Eul’s future food’hydrogen’ Achieved ’30 trillion won in sales’ in 2050

POSCO selected the hydrogen business as a food for the future following lithium. The goal is to achieve sales of 30 trillion won in the hydrogen business by establishing a 5 million ton hydrogen production system by 2050.

On the 13th, POSCO unveiled its vision as a’Green Hydrogen Leading Company leading the hydrogen economy’, which means that it will pioneer the future clean energy hydrogen business and lead the decarbonization era.

By 2030, we have acquired core technologies and production capabilities, such as technology to produce hydrogen by electrolyzing water and technology to extract hydrogen, and secure the leadership in the future hydrogen market by fostering the hydrogen business as an axis of the group’s growth business. I plan to do it.

POSCO Chairman Jeong-Woo Choi said, “We will lead the way in producing and supplying hydrogen, the core of clean energy in the future,” and “I will contribute to the completion of the national hydrogen ecosystem for a carbon-neutral society.”

Hydrogen, which is in the spotlight as a next-generation clean energy source, is expected to increase annual domestic demand to 1.94 million tons in 2030 and more than 5.26 million tons in 2040, and the field of use is expected to expand and grow from the petrochemical industry to transportation and power generation.

Accordingly, the government also launched the Hydrogen Economy Committee and declared the Green New Deal policy and is promoting the transition to a hydrogen economy.

Currently, POSCO has a production capacity of 7,000 tons of hydrogen per year using Cokes Oven Gas and natural gas (LNG) generated from the steel manufacturing process.

About 3500 tons of by-product hydrogen is extracted and used for temperature control and oxidation prevention during steel production.

In addition, it has the capabilities necessary for hydrogen production and use, such as developing the world’s first steel products for hydrogen fuel cell separators and supplying them to domestic hydrogen cars.

In the future, POSCO will strengthen its capabilities such as research on the’hydrogen reduction steelmaking method’, a steel production technology using hydrogen, development of steel materials necessary to’produce-transport-storage-use’ hydrogen, increase by-product hydrogen production facilities, and develop core technologies for hydrogen production. It is a plan to do it.

At the same time, it plans to pursue a large-scale investment by exploring various business opportunities such as distribution and infrastructure construction of’green hydrogen’ and participation in the’green hydrogen’ project.

Through this, the production capacity of by-product hydrogen will be increased to 70,000 tons by 2025, and blue hydrogen will be produced up to 500,000 tons by 2030 in partnership with global companies.

‘Green Hydrogen’ plans to complete a production system of 5 million tons of hydrogen by 2050, including establishing a production system of 2 million tons by 2040.

POSCO is opening the era of decarbonization and hydrogen in the steel sector by implementing a hydrogen reduction steel mill based on’green hydrogen’.

When the hydrogen reduction steelmaking method is commercialized, up to 3.7 million tons of’green hydrogen’ per year will be required. POSCO is expected to become the largest hydrogen consumer and producer.

In order to secure the core technologies necessary for the production and transportation of’green hydrogen’, we will conduct technical cooperation with domestic and foreign research institutes and promote partnerships with global companies.

It will also develop ammonia hydrogen extraction technology, which is considered a key technology for transport and storage of hydrogen.

As an initial project, the company plans to establish an infrastructure such as the installation of hydrogen charging stations in the steelworks area, and to foster a hydrogen ecosystem based on steel logistics, such as converting steel transportation vehicles and internal business vehicles to hydrogen vehicles, to create a demand base.

In addition, by concentrating the capabilities of the group companies, a value chain over the entire cycle of’production-transport-storage-use’ is also prepared.

POSCO International participates in the government’s hydrogen introduction project and overseas hydrogen projects using overseas networks.

POSCO ENERGY will build a hydrogen-only terminal and at the same time convert the current LNG turbine power generation to hydrogen turbine power in stages from 30 years.

POSCO E&C will be responsible for the construction of hydrogen urban development projects as well as projects necessary for hydrogen storage and transport.

A company official said, “We plan to launch the business division in January of next year,” and said, “We plan to launch the hydrogen business in earnest by promoting R&D cooperation with domestic and overseas research institutes centering on RIST (Pohang Institute of Industrial Science and Technology).”
