New Delhi: Prominent lawyer and RTI activist Prashant Bhushan has criticized the police law amendment in Kerala. On Twitter, Bhushan described the amendment as “ruthless”, which carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison for defaming individuals. He further added that the move was aimed at silencing dissidents.
The ordinance was signed by Governor Arif Mohammad Khan. The amendment provides for imprisonment for up to 5 years or a fine of up to Rs. This is a cognizable department that can file cases without a warrant. Even if no one complains, the police can file a case voluntarily.
