Tottenham Hotspur secured a 2-1 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion in a Premier League encounter on April 18, 2026, at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, moving within striking distance of the top four as the season enters its final stretch.

The win, achieved through second-half goals from James Maddison and Brennan Johnson, ended Brighton’s brief lead and halted their push for European qualification. Maddison opened the scoring in the 58th minute after a swift counter-attack initiated by Pedro Porro, curling a left-footed finish past Bart Verbruggen. Johnson doubled the advantage in the 74th minute, latching onto a through-ball from Yves Bissouma and slotting low into the corner.

Brighton had taken an early lead through Danny Welbeck, who capitalized on a defensive lapse in the 22nd minute to head home from close range after a corner was poorly cleared. The goal marked Welbeck’s eighth of the season and briefly put the Seagulls in control, but they failed to maintain momentum as Tottenham grew into the game after halftime.

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou made two key changes at the break, introducing Maddison and Johnson for Dejan Kulusevski and Richarlison, a shift that immediately altered the tempo. The Australian coach praised the impact of his substitutes, stating they “brought the energy and directness we needed to break down a well-organized Brighton side.”

Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi acknowledged his side’s failure to close out the game, citing a drop in intensity after taking the lead. “We started well and deserved the goal, but we couldn’t sustain the pressure,” De Zerbi said in his post-match press conference. “When you invite teams like Tottenham back into the game, they will punish you.”

The result leaves Tottenham with 58 points from 32 matches, just two points behind Aston Villa in fourth place and within reach of a Champions League spot with six games remaining. Brighton remain on 49 points, still in contention for Europa League qualification but now facing a tighter race as Manchester United and Newcastle United close in from behind.

Statistically, Tottenham controlled 52% of possession and outshot Brighton 14 to 8, with six shots on target compared to Brighton’s three. Maddison’s goal was his ninth league goal of the season, while Johnson reached his seventh, underscoring their growing importance in Postecoglou’s attacking plans.

Defensively, Tottenham conceded only their second goal from a set piece in their last five league games, a positive sign for a side that has struggled with aerial threats earlier in the season. Brighton, meanwhile, failed to score from open play for the second match in a row, relying solely on set-piece opportunities for their goal.

Looking ahead, Tottenham travel to face West Ham United in a London derby next weekend, while Brighton host Fulham at the Amex Stadium. Both matches carry significant implications for the final European places, with Tottenham aiming to cement their top-four challenge and Brighton seeking to rebound from a disappointing home defeat.
