President Moon to hold ‘Korea-EU summit’…to expand exchanges and cooperation

President Moon Jae-in held a meeting with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen at the Nuvola Convention Center in Rome on the afternoon of the 30th (local time) and agreed to expand bilateral cooperation.

The Korea-EU summit is the first in four months since the G7 summit was held in June, and on this day, Executive Chairman von der Leyen expressed his closeness, saying, “The meeting with President Moon at the last British G7 was impressive.”

At the meeting, the two leaders highly praised Korea and the EU as strategic partners for not only promoting bilateral exchanges and cooperation, but also responding to major international issues such as climate change and health and closely cooperating in the process of overcoming the coronavirus. In addition, they agreed to contribute together to support vaccines in low-income countries and strengthen the global vaccine supply chain.

Executive Chairman Tulhi von der Leyen expressed his welcome, praising Korea’s NDC upgrade and joining the Global Methane Pledge.

He also said, “In the field of digital and new technology innovation, where Korea is at the cutting edge, cooperation between the two sides is necessary.”

In response, President Moon said, “I agree that the potential for cooperation is very great, and I hope that the EU’s GDPR adequacy decision will be made as soon as possible.”

The Korea-EU bilateral meeting is evaluated as an opportunity to develop a strategic partnership and cooperation on the international stage and strengthen communication between the two sides.
