Executive Chairman von der Leyen said this in a post posted on social media (SNS) LinkedIn on the same day, referring to the ‘Green Partnership’ signed on the occasion of the Korea-EU summit the previous day.

Regarding the reason for signing the green partnership, he said, “We will strengthen cooperation in strategic areas such as clean energy, research, and digital.”

“The Republic of Korea is one of the EU’s oldest and closest partners,” he said. “I was very pleased to be able to visit Seoul yesterday (22nd) for a summit and to celebrate the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.”

“Democratic countries like ours must work together in the areas of economic resilience and security while maintaining openness and promoting healthy competition,” he added.

Von der Leyen, a German national, said, “As I told President Yoon (Seok-yeol), as a German, I am well aware of the pain and suffering of families divided between the wall and the barbed wire (of partition ).” I believe that,” he emphasized.

The day before in Seoul, at a summit meeting between European Commission President von der Leyen, EU Council President Charles Michel, and President Yoon, Korea and the EU adopted a joint statement and the newly launched Korea-EU Foreign Ministers’ Strategic Dialogue set up for comprehensive security agreed to strengthen cooperation. This is the first time since 2015 that a joint statement has been adopted on the occasion of the Korea-EU summit.
