SEOUL – President Yoon Seok-yeol arrived back in Seoul on the 10th after successfully completing the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) and G20 summits, concluding his 5-night, 7-day trip. The President, accompanied by First Lady Kim Kun-hee, departed from Palam Air Force Base in New Delhi, India, aboard Air Force Unit 1, the presidential plane. The departure was marked by dignitaries from both sides bidding farewell, including Kaushal Kishor, Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs, and Gouranga Lal Das, Director of East Asia in the Ministry of External Affairs, representing India.
During the previous day’s G20 Summit, President Yoon addressed the international community, announcing a significant donation of $300 million (approximately KRW 400 billion) to the Green Climate Fund (GCF). He also proposed the establishment of a global green shipping route, encouraging collaborative efforts towards a sustainable future.
In addition, President Yoon stressed the importance of an ‘international order based on norms’ and called upon China and Russia to play a responsible role in addressing North Korea’s nuclear and missile threats. Notably, he expressed openness to improving relations with China in the future.
Furthermore, President Yoon embarked on initiatives aimed at exploring new export markets and strengthening economic cooperation with countries such as the Philippines, Indonesia, ASEAN, and India – a populous nation with immense potential.
At the G20 summit, he demonstrated strong global leadership by advocating for climate crisis measures, supporting Ukraine, and advocating for digital norms.
In his engagements with the Indo-Pacific region, President Yoon addressed critical issues such as North Korea’s nuclear program and underscored the importance of a ‘norm-based international order’ in forums such as the ASEAN, ASEAN + 3 (Korea, China, Japan), and Summit East Asia (EAS) held in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Upon his return to Korea on the 11th, President Yoon is expected to focus on addressing various pending matters, including the possibility of North Korea-Russia talks.
