‘Prime Minister’s No. 0’ Ahn Cheol-soo’s decision on the fate of the transition chairperson

The ‘Yun Seok-Yeol takeover committee’ is working hard to form a government sculpture. The morning newspapers on the 30th paid attention to Ahn Cheol-soo, the 20th president of the transition committee, who was scheduled to make a remark to the effect that “I will not assume the post of prime minister” in the process. In addition, the contents of the revision of the ‘Lease 3 Act’ (the right to apply for contract renewal, the limit on the monthly rent, the monthly rent report system), which the transition committee is paying attention to, the contents of the adjusted unit price of electricity in the second quarter were discussed.

Even when the transition committee was inaugurated, there were speculations that Chairman Ahn would become the first prime minister of the ‘Yun Seok-yeol government’. However, as time goes by, it is expected that other figures will become prime ministers. As these analyzes emerged, the morning newspapers expected that Chairman Ahn would soon announce his move.

The Kookmin Ilbo had an article on the front page titled ‘An, not prime minister, focus on the transition committee’. The Kookmin Ilbo said, “Chairman Ahn is said to be putting more weight on the party challenge than the prime minister.”

The Kookmin Ilbo said, “An analysis is coming out that Chairman Ahn, who had in mind a challenge to the presidency five years later, was preparing the foundation for the party.” Recently, with the prospect that the first prime minister would be an ‘economic turmoil’, attention was drawn to Chairman Ahn’s decision.”

Will the fate of ‘Lease 3 Law’ change in the ‘Yoon Seok-Yeol government’?

The Democratic Party of Korea has publicly opposed the abolition or reduction of the 3rd lease law by the transition committee. Following the issue of the relocation of the presidential office, another issue emerged in the political arena.

The Kyunghyang Shinmun reported that the “Acquisition Committee “persuades revision” Democratic Party “NO”… An article titled ‘Friction already over the 3 rental laws’ was published on page 5. The Kyunghyang Shinmun emphasized, “It is not easy for the Democrats to take care of themselves as the legislation has been dealt with with the accusation of ‘legislative dictatorship’.”

He continued, “Even if amendments and supplements are made, it is for this reason that the method of gradual amendment or extension of the grace period while maintaining the fundamental system of the law is being discussed.” There is also talk that it has to be done,” he predicted.

The Segye Ilbo published an article on the front page titled ‘”Increasing privately registered rental housing to revitalize the market”. The Segye Ilbo said, “The takeover committee announced on the 29th that it would actively promote private rental registration and private rental housing as a short-term measure in relation to the normalization of the real estate market. In the long term, we plan to persuade the Democratic Party to revise the so-called ‘Lease 3 Act’.”

The Segye Ilbo also said, “Professor Gyo-eon Shim of Konkuk University, head of the Real Estate Task Force of the Acquisition Committee, said at a briefing held at the Transition Committee in Toongui-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul on the same day, ‘The current government has introduced the 3 rental law without sufficient social consensus and grace period to ensure the safety of the people’s residence. He said, “In addition, we are also considering ways to strengthen support through expansion of fund loans and loans, financial tax support, and public housing land and REITs system,” he said.

Electricity rate hike in 2Q and outlook for 3Q

The government chose to freeze electricity rates in half in the second quarter. Despite this decision, the morning newspapers predicted that the fuel cost burden due to the rise in international oil prices was still large. As a result, there are speculations that the ‘Yun Seok-Yeol government’ will raise electricity rates in the third quarter.

The JoongAng Ilbo published an article on the second page with the title, ‘Electricity rate increase next month, likely to be raised in the third quarter’. The JoongAng Ilbo said, “KEPCO submitted to the government a plan to raise fuel costs and climate and environment rates as well as quarterly fuel costs as of next month due to the recently increased energy prices. However, the government has chosen to put a final hold on the additional increase proposal,” he said.

He continued, “Although the government prevented further increases in electricity rates, the promise of President-elect Yoon, ‘to completely abolish electricity rate increases,’ did not come true. In addition to the initial additional rate increase, there was also an analysis that the government decided to raise the standard fuel cost and climate environment rate last year. It is said that a consensus has been formed,” he added.

The Hankyoreh reported on the 2nd page that “the average electricity bill for a household of four will rise by 2,300 won in April.” The Hankyoreh said, “From next month, electricity rates will increase by 6.9 won per kWh. “For a four-person household that maintains the average power consumption, the monthly rate is expected to increase by 2,300 won,” he said.

The Hankyoreh said, “On the 28th, the transition committee took a position that it would not be attached to this promise.” It is a matter for the power to decide,” he said.
