Professor Kwon Seung-won of Kyung Hee Korean Medical Center proves the effectiveness of herbal medicine prescription for ‘fatigue after stroke’

According to a study result, the occurrence of ‘post-stroke fatigue (PSF)’ could be improved with the herbal medicine prescription ‘Boyanghwano-tang’, as inflammation and depressive symptoms caused by stroke had a significant effect.

‘Post-stroke fatigue’, which is called a hindrance to stroke rehabilitation, is a relatively common symptom experienced by 40 to 70% of stroke patients. Unlike general fatigue, which is relieved by rest, it causes long-term lethargy, which interferes with active rehabilitation treatment for stroke patients. In general, when stroke patients feel fatigue for at least two weeks in a month and lethargy persists, it is diagnosed as ‘post-stroke fatigue’.

A team led by Professor Seungwon Kwon from the Stroke and Brain Disease Center at Kyunghee Korean Medical Center analyzed the medical records of hospitalized stroke patients to evaluate the level of fatigue as the degree of depression and inflammation index of stroke patients increased in the occurrence of ‘post-stroke fatigue’. It was confirmed that the questionnaire score increased significantly. This is the result showing that the level of depression and inflammation of the patient has an effect on the occurrence of fatigue after stroke.

The research team found that the prescription of Boyanghwano-tang had a significant effect in the simultaneous study to improve fatigue after stroke. A literature review and meta-analysis of 6 clinical trials evaluating the effects of administering Boyang Hwan O-tang to patients with ‘post-stroke fatigue’ published by October 2021 were conducted, It was confirmed that the fatigue symptoms after stroke were significantly improved compared to the patients who received only Western medical treatment.

Professor Kwon Seung-won, who is the head of the research, said, “Boyanghwanotang is the most representative stroke treatment in oriental medicine. It is known to help the recovery of cranial nerve cells by improving inflammation caused by stroke through its anti-inflammatory effect.

In addition, “the degree of depression other than inflammation has also been found to affect the formation of fatigue after stroke, but general antidepressant treatment may induce lethargy in patients, and herbal medicine prescriptions with antidepressant effects can be used as a treatment to compensate for this.” did”

These studies, supported by the National Research Foundation’s first research support project, were published in the international SCI-level academic journals ‘Healthcare’ and ‘Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine’, and their excellence was recognized.
