Mauricio Pochettino has been fired from the position of coach by the French club PSG, eighteen months after taking the position. Although the reports that the Argentinian coach will be removed from the club have already been confirmed, PSG is now announcing this officially.
Pochettino’s exit is part of the ongoing changes at PSG after French forward Kylian Mbappe renewed his contract with the club. Prior to this, PSG had appointed Luis Campos by excluding Leonardo who was the sporting director.
Pochettino replaced Thomas Tuchel as PSG coach during the 2020-21 season and only won the French Cup that season. Criticism of Pochettino has increased since PSG were knocked out early in the Champions League and French Cup despite having a huge squad this season.
PSG will pay €15 million in damages to Pochettino and his assistant staff, who will be released from the club. Miguel D’Agostino, Jesus Perez, Sebastian Pochettino and Toni Jimenez will also leave the club with Pochettino.
PSG have already identified Pochettino’s replacement. Christophe Gaultier, who won the French League as Lille’s coach in Pochettino’s first season in charge, will now lead PSG. Coming to PSG from Nice, his appointment will be announced by the club soon.
