Thai Minister Attends ASEAN Meeting to Combat Fake News

On September 21, 2023, Mrs. Puangpetch Chunlaid, Minister of the Prime Minister’s Office, and her team arrived in Danang, Vietnam to participate in the 16th ASEAN Information Ministers Meeting. The meeting, held under the concept of “MEDIA: From Information to Information for a Resilient and Responsive ASEAN,” focused on cooperation in information and communication within the ASEAN region. One of the key agenda items was the development of mechanisms to combat fake news in online media.

During the meeting, Minister Puangpetch engaged in bilateral discussions with the Vietnamese Minister of Information and Communications, specifically addressing the issue of cooperation in fighting fake news. Vietnam, in particular, had proposed the establishment of an anti-fake news working group in ASEAN. Additionally, the Thai Minister also had scheduled talks with the Cambodian Minister of Information regarding cooperation in stopping call center gangs.

With the participation of ASEAN and its dialogue partners, the meeting also explored the digital transformation for the media and the application of technology and information cooperation. Officials from the Royal Thai Embassy in Hanoi and the Consulate Yai joined Minister Puangpetch and her team in attending the meeting. The event served as an opportunity to enhance collaboration and foster a resilient and responsive ASEAN in the face of emerging challenges.
