ISTANBUL (Yonhap News) Correspondent Jo Seong-heum = Russian President Vladimir Putin granted citizenship to former US intelligence agent Edward Snowden on the 26th (local time) for revealing secrets about the US government’s indiscriminate intelligence collection.

According to Reuters, AFP, and TASS, Putin announced that according to the Constitution of the Russian Federation, Edward Snowden, who was born in the United States in 1983, would be accepted as a citizen of the Russian Federation. The Russian government posted a list of 57 people who were granted citizenship along with Snowden on the government website on the same day.

Snowden is a person who shocked the world by revealing the indiscriminate collection of personal information by the United States National Security Agency (NSA) in June 2013. The current President of the United States, Joe Biden, was the Vice President of the United States at the time the Snowden revelations.

Snowden, who had been hiding in Hong Kong after the revelation, tried to go to South America via Russia, but was locked up for a month in the transit area of Moscow International Airport due to the expulsion of his passport by the US authorities.

Snowden received a three-year temporary residence permit from Russian immigration authorities again in August 2014 after the temporary residency period expired, and has been living in Moscow for an additional three years in early 2017.

In 2017, he married former acroco Nindsey Mills, and in October 2020, he applied for Russian citizenship after receiving a permanent residence permit (Vid na Sütelstvo) which is equivalent to permanent residence in the United States.

He said he had sought asylum in 27 countries, including Germany and Poland, but all but Russia refused to accept him for fear of US retaliation.

A petition is campaigning for Snowden’s pardon in the United States, but the United States government demands that he should return to his country and face justice for the crime of revealing state secrets.

If convicted in his home country, Snowden could face up to 20 years in prison.
