Russian President Vladimir Putin is in Iran while America is intensifying its efforts to isolate Iran. Putin arrived in Iran on Tuesday and met with Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi. He will also meet with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Various issues in the region, including Syria, and the UN recommendation to resume food grain exports from Ukraine will be discussed. This is Putin’s second foreign visit since the start of the war in Ukraine. Putin is visiting Iran for the fifth time.
As US efforts to revive the nuclear deal have failed, the US has stepped up efforts to isolate Iran. With this aim, President Joe Biden visited Israel and the Gulf. Putin’s visit to Iran is right after. Several high-ranking Russian officials have visited Iran in recent weeks. On Tuesday, the Russian company Gazprom also signed a new contract worth four billion dollars with the Iranian oil company.
Putin’s discussion with Erdogan will also be crucial. Turkey has not imposed sanctions on Russia despite providing arms to Ukraine in the war.
