(Istanbul = Yonhap News) Correspondent Kim Seung-wook = Russian President Vladimir Putin said he would deliver missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads to Belarus in the coming months.

According to AFP news agency, Putin made the remarks during a meeting with Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko in Saint Petersburg on the 25th (local time).

“In the next few months, we will transfer the Iskander M tactical missile system, which can be used as a ballistic or cruise missile,” Putin said.

It also proposed to modify Belarusian military aircraft to use nuclear weapons.

“Many Sukhoi (SU-25) fighters are being used by the Belarusian military,” Putin said.

“This modernization has to be done in Russian aircraft factories, and the training of personnel accordingly,” he added. “We will agree on how to achieve this.”

Putin has mentioned the possibility of using nuclear weapons several times since he invaded Ukraine in February.

President Lukashenko said last month that Belarus had purchased from Russia the Iskander missile and the S-400 surface-to-air missile system capable of carrying nuclear warheads.
