Putin’s Defensive Movement Order Card… Referendum is ‘for a cause’

Such military mobilization order comes from the recent difficulties in Russia in the 7 month war in Ukraine.

It is analyzed that it is a card pulled out by the Russian President Putin, who is on the defensive inside and outside, to turn the tide.

Reporter Kim Ji-sun summarized the current war situation.

Ukraine, which recently stepped up its counter-offensive, managed to advance as far as Lisichansk in eastern Donbas in Luhansk Oblast.

This region has been a ‘tipping point’ where Russia and Ukraine have been fighting each other again and again since the early days of the war.

Ukraine, which has recaptured most of Kharkiv in the northeast, including Igeum, is gaining momentum and continues its offensive in the eastern regions following southern regions such as Kherson.

On the other hand, Russia, which has lost its occupied territories one after another, has a severe military shortage sufficient to recruit even prisoners as mercenaries.

Although North Korea has denied it, the military supplies are not enough for the United States to announce that Russia has requested the export of weapons from North Korea.

Matthew Schmidt, an associate professor at the University of New Haven, pointed out that the mobilization plan would be a big risk, far from helping Russia’s military power, as it takes time to train and organize.

It is also predicted that the war will be prolonged if Russia sends 300,000 reserve troops.

In the midst of this, as President Putin announces his support for annexation referendums in Russian-occupied territories along with the mobilization order, the background draws attention.

From the 23rd to the 27th of next month, the administrations of the Russian occupied territories will ask residents of the eastern areas of Donbas-Donetsk and Luhansk Oblasts, as well as the southern Kherson Oblast and Zaporiza Oblast for or against annexation to Russia.

This is a sudden decision that overturned the original rumors in November, and it is interpreted that the intention was to create a justification for Ukraine to invade official Russian territory.

“President Putin is using the vote to justify the mobilization order,” Schmidt said.

Ukraine and the West also objected that the results of illegal and fake Russian-sponsored votes would not be recognized.
