Racial slurs by spectators during the match; ‘Revenge’ English players

Budapest (Hungary): Hungary fans racially abused English players during a World Cup qualifier. Goals from Raheem Sterling, Harry Kane, Harry Maguire and Declan Rice helped England to a 4–0 victory.

International media have reported that fans have voiced their displeasure against Manchester City star Raheem Sterling and his replacement Jude Bellingham. Fans greeted the English players, who were kneeling on the ground before the start of the match, as part of a global protest against racism.

During the match, fans threw bottles and plastic glasses on the ground several times. The ‘fight’ intensified as England players Decoulan Rice and Jack Grialish retaliated by gesturing to the fans to drink the water they had thrown away. UEFA, Europe’s governing body, has previously ordered Hungary’s next three home matches to be played at a closed stadium following a disciplinary violation by fans during the last Euro Cup.

However, the order was not complied with as the World Cup qualifiers fall under FIFA’s jurisdiction. FIFA said in a statement that the incident was being investigated and that disciplinary action had been taken. FIFA said it would not tolerate provocative behavior from spectators. The English Football Association (IFA) has strongly condemned reports of disciplinary action against England players.

England’s Harry Maguire has said on social media that he will support his teammates and staff and will not allow any discrimination. The Hungarian Football Association (HFA) said 60,000 fans had gathered at the stadium to protest the team’s crackdown on anti-social elements who had entered the stadium.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has strongly condemned racial slurs.
