RCC Founding Director Dr. M. Krishnan Nair passes away | Dr M KrishnanNair | RCC

Thiruvananthapuram: Senior oncologist Dr. M. Krishnan Nair (81) passed away here today. He is the Founding Director of the Regional Cancer Center (RCC), Thiruvananthapuram. He died at his residence in Vellayambalam, Sri Lanka Gardens. He was undergoing treatment for a congenital disease. The country has honored him with the Padma Shri. He was a member of the Cancer Advisory Board of the World Health Organization. Wife: Valsala, daughter Manju (deceased)

He was born in 1939 to Madhavan Nair and Meenakshiamma in the Chittalloor family of Peroorkada. He completed his MBBS from Thiruvananthapuram Medical College in 1963. After completing his MD in Clinical Oncology, he joined the Department of Radiology, Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram. After studying in London, he returned to Thiruvananthapuram Medical College and formed a small department for cancer treatment. He was the RCC Director from 1981 to 2003. He later took part in the formation of the RCC. He wrote a book, Experiences in Cancer Treatment, entitled ‘Me and the RCC’.

In 1981, he joined the RCC. As a result of the efforts of Krishnan Nair, the first pediatric cancer treatment unit was started in India. Medicines and other necessities were provided free of cost to needy children. The Community and Preventive Oncology Department was first established in India in 1985 at the RCC to coordinate public awareness programs for cancer control.

He is a member of various national and state level organizations related to cancer control and has received the Nathwahi Cancer Award from the Hospital, the Vimala Shah Award from the Banaras Hindu University, the Bhishmacharya Award in 1993 and the Chikilsaratnam Award from the Dhanwantari Trust. He has participated in numerous national and international conferences and has authored more than 75 research projects and published over 150 scientific papers.
