Heavy snow has fallen in the East Sea of Japan in recent days, and the accumulated snowfall in some areas of Niigata Prefecture is approaching 2m.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the accumulated snowfall as of 11 am on the 31st was 1m89cm in Tsunanmachi, Niigata Prefecture, and 1m58cm in Nozawa Onsen-mura, Nagano Prefecture.
In Oga-machi, Niigata Prefecture, the snowfall amounted to 54 centimeters for 12 hours until 10 a.m. on that day, the highest since statistics were compiled in 1980.
NHK reported that there was a lot of snow in the East Sea of Japan due to the cold wave coming in from the north and the winter pressure arrangement, and the amount of snowfall was up to five times that of the previous year, NHK reported.
The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a heavy snow warning and a heavy snow advisory for Niigata Prefecture, which has the largest amount of snow, and urged people to prepare for damage from heavy snow.
