Max Verstappen (Red Bull), who took sick leave from the F1 Saudi Arabia GP press conference on Thursday and appeared on the circuit from Friday, seems to have no rivals even after going sick.
■ Verstappen, who had the flu, sweats for the first time
Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin) overtook Sergio Perez (Red Bull) and finished the first day with the second fastest time, while Verstappen showed a speed edge. Many F1 officials see him as the reigning champion, 41-year-old Alonso -age.
But Marko says it is very clear that Red Bull’s two-time world champion Max Verstappen has no challenger at the moment.
“Actually, only Max is relatively far ahead.”
“Perez is right in front of Alonso and you can see Max making a big difference for himself.”
Verstappen, 25, appeared to be suffering from a stomach ailment, despite his late arrival in Jeddah.
“Max had a relatively bad flu.”
“This is the first time I’ve seen him sweat this season.”
Mercedes won’t be competitive until the summer
But Verstappen may not be sweating too much late on Sunday afternoon.
“I don’t think Ferrari and Mercedes can solve the problem quickly,” Marko told Kleine Zeitung.
“So I think Aston Martin will be the first chaser. I don’t think Mercedes will be competitive by the summer.”
