The Washington Nationals and Baltimore Orioles met on May 16, 2026, in a contest defined by early power hitting from Washington and a late-inning rally from Baltimore.

Washington established an early lead in the bottom of the second inning when Keibert Ruiz hit a three-run home run against Orioles pitcher Chris Bassitt. The Nationals extended their advantage in the bottom of the third inning with an RBI double by CJ Abrams, also against Bassitt.

Pitching for the Nationals, Cade Cavalli managed several key defensive moments early in the game. Cavalli recorded a strikeout of Samuel Basallo in the top of the first inning and induced a 5-4-3 double play against Jeremiah Jackson in the top of the second.

The Nationals’ defense remained active in the top of the sixth inning. Daylen Lile made a significant catch on a ball hit by Adley Rutschman, and CJ Abrams recorded another defensive play to take a hit away from Pete Alonso, both while Cavalli was on the mound.

Baltimore began a comeback effort in the top of the seventh inning. Samuel Basallo and Tyler O’Neill both hit home runs off Cade Cavalli. Taylor Ward recorded an RBI hit against Nationals pitcher PJ Poulin, who also saw Jacob Young make a catch against the wall to stop a hit by Jeremiah Jackson.

Washington responded in the bottom of the seventh inning when Brady House hit an RBI double against Orioles pitcher Keegan Akin.
