The Falcon 9 rocket launched by Elon Musk’s SpaceX in 2015 crashed into the moon and was in the process of colliding, the BBC reported on the 26th (local time). However, even if it collides, it is not expected to have any significant impact.

The rocket completed the mission of sending a weather satellite to 1.65 million km in the year of launch, but had no fuel to return to Earth, so it was abandoned in outer space. Astronomer Jonathan McDowell predicted that it would be the first instance of an uncontrolled rocket collide with the moon, but with little effect.

Professor McDowell of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in the United States said that the rocket went through a possibly chaotic journey due to the gravitational force of the Earth, the moon and the sun. He said the rocket was “dead” and obeyed only the law of gravity.

As such, it was launched into space and completed its mission, but there is no energy to return to Earth, so millions of garbage are thrown into space. Professor McDowell said, “In the last few decades, there are 50 large objects that we have completely lost our way to. This has happened many times before, and we didn’t even notice it. This will still be the first case (where the route has been confirmed),” he added.

The Falcon 9 booster is expected to hit the moon on March 4th. According to McDowell, “The rocket has an empty 4 ton steel tank with an additional rocket engine at the back. Imagine a stone being thrown at a speed of 8050 km/h. I wouldn’t be that happy.” In any case, artificial craters (craters) are created on the surface of the moon.

Bill Gray, who writes software that tracks space matter near Earth, said the rocket began flying under the lunar gravity on the 5th and is expected to hit the far side of the moon on March 4. In 2009, McDowell and other astronomers were able to prove what would happen if a similar-sized rocket crashed into the moon. He said scientists are unlikely to learn anything new from the crash.

He also said that there will be no immediate impact, but space debris drifting and colliding is possible in the future. It will be much easier to organize slow traffic in space than waiting for it to become a problem.”
