Ronaldo held talks with Portugal coach; A definite decision on future matters; Report

Cristiano Ronaldo has reportedly held talks with new coach Roberto Martinez to decide his future with the Portuguese team. Ronaldo, who joined Saudi Arabian club Al Nasser in January, is said to have held talks with the Portuguese coach in Riyadh. Martinez had come to Riyadh to watch the Spanish Supercup.

Fernando Santos resigned as Portugal coach after the Qatar World Cup and Roberto Martinez took over. Fernando Santos deputized for Cristiano Ronaldo in some World Cup matches.

Then there was a lot of criticism against Santos. With Martinez as coach, fans are eagerly awaiting what the future holds for Rono.

According to reports, Martinez did not give a definite answer to the question about Ronaldo’s future after becoming the coach of the Portuguese team. Martinez had said earlier that such decisions are made on the field and that he is not a coach who makes decisions in the office.

Martinez said his first task would be to contact all the current players and that he would anyway speak to Ronaldo, who has played with the national team for almost two decades.

But according to El Equipe reports, Martinez has the same plans to make Ronaldo part of the Portugal team. The player is likely to stay with the team until the 2024 Euro Cup.

Cristiano Ronaldo is the all-time leading scorer in international competitions with 118 goals in 196 appearances for Portugal. Ronaldo has a chance to extend his record even further by staying with the Portugal team.

Portugal’s Euro Cup qualifiers begin against Liechtenstein and Luxembourg in March. Ronaldo is also likely to feature in these games.

Martinez’s contract runs until 2026. Roberto Martinez is the third foreign coach to coach the Portuguese team. Martinez, who coached the Belgian team for six years, stepped down after the team was eliminated from the Qatar World Cup in the group stage.

Martinez, who has been in the coaching field since 2007, became responsible for the Belgian national team in 2016. During this time, under Martinez, Belgium remained at the top of the world rankings for a long time.
