Russia claims last Ukrainian warship sunk

The “Juri Olefirenko” is the last warship of the Ukrainian Navy. Russia claims to have destroyed the ship.

The Russian military says it has sunk Ukraine’s last warship. “On May 29, the last warship of the Ukrainian Navy, Yuri Olefirenko, was destroyed at its berth in Odessa using high-precision weapons from the Russian Air Force and Missile Forces,” a Russian Defense Ministry spokesman said on Wednesday.

Ukraine has not yet confirmed the loss of the DropShip. The information cannot be verified independently.

The “Juri Olefirenko” is a Soviet-designed landing ship. It was commissioned in 1971. The Ukrainian fleet is significantly inferior to the Russian Navy. After the Russian annexation of the Black Sea peninsula of Crimea in 2014, she lost most of her ships. After the start of the Russian war of aggression, there were more casualties. Thus, the crew of the flagship “Hetman Sahaydachny” sank the frigate themselves so that it could not fall into the hands of the Russian military.

The Russian Navy controls most of Ukraine’s Black Sea territory and can also blockade the ports of Odessa and Mykolaiv. Warships of the Russian Black Sea Fleet regularly shell the Ukrainian mainland from the sea with cruise missiles and rockets.
