As Russia’s invasion of Ukraine continues for the 33rd day, Russian troops are concentrating on occupying the southern port city of Mariupol.

While the Russian Ministry of Defense has announced that it will focus on eastern Donbas, in the capital, Kiiu, the military seems to be retreating to the north for reorganization.

Britain: “Russian supply shortage worsens…Most locations near Mariupol are secured”

The British Defense Ministry said in an updated intelligence report on the 28th (local time) that “there was no significant change in the deployment of the Russian military.”

The British Defense Ministry said, “The continuing lack of momentum and morale of the Russian army and the aggressive fighting in Ukraine are exacerbating the supply shortage.”

“Russia has secured most of the positions in the southern region near Mariupol,” he added.

The Ukrainian Defense Ministry said 600 bodies of Russian soldiers killed in the past five days were transported to Russia, and that Ukrainian forces inflicted significant losses on Russia.

It added that the Russian military is deploying Iskander missiles in Kalinkavich, Belarus, and that additional troops are moving, such as in the Pacific Navy.

In the northwest and east of the capital Kiiu, Russian forces attempted to break through the defenses, and in the eastern Donetsk and Luhansk regions, it was advertised that it had repelled Russian attacks five times.

He explained that defensive battles continued in Kamianka and Suha in the northern Kharkiv region, and defensive efforts were also made in southern Zaporizawa and Mikolaiu.

◆Weekly isolated from Mariupol… “Ukrainian forces seem to be unable to survive for a few days due to food and water shortages”

According to the New York Times (NYT) and CNN, the Russian military is currently concentrating on occupying Mariupol.

As the siege of Mariupol continues for weeks, Ukrainian soldiers and residents isolated in the city are struggling with food and water shortages.

They are said to be using even unpurified sewage for their survival, and some analysts say that the Ukrainian military will not be able to survive for a long time due to food shortages.

Ukrainian forces counterattacked the Russian-controlled southern Kherson. The Ukrainian side said it carried out a massive missile strike against the Russian command at Kherson Airport, killing a Russian general in the process.

There were also protests by citizens. In Kahouka, Kherson province, people took to the streets to protest against the Russian army. A local journalist told CNN that Russian troops still control the area, and fierce fighting broke out near Novakahouka and Kabrisk.

◆Russian move to northern Kiiwu… Preparing for refurbishment

In Kiiu, Russian forces are consolidating their positions at a key point in the north.

The Ukrainian military said some Russian troops were moving to northern Belarus to prepare for reorganization and had passed through the Chernobyl exclusion zone, which they controlled. He also said that the Chernobyl reactor area is being used as a logistics site.

The Russian army blocked the village of Slavotitz near Chernobyl Station over the weekend and is attempting to consolidate control of northern Kiiu by intensifying its attack on Chernivu in northeastern Kiiu. A large-scale Russian airstrike continued in Cherniv.

On the afternoon of the 27th, an air raid warning was issued in Kiiu, and a huge explosion sound was heard around midnight. The Ukraine Emergency Agency said a fire broke out in a house in Kiiu around 11:12 pm on the same day with missile debris and was extinguished at 1:24 am the following month.

◆Recapture some areas in the Northeast… Russia to focus on blocking supply routes for western, central, and southern lines

In the northeast, Ukrainian forces are believed to have retaken part of the outskirts of the second city of Kharkiv. Ukrainian forces said they had succeeded in acquiring the areas near Kharkiv and Sumi. It is an area about 50 km from the Russian border and has been subjected to continuous attack by Russian forces from the first day of the invasion.

The Kharkiv authorities also announced on the 26th that “part of the eastern part of Kharkiv had been liberated.” Seven people, including two children, were reportedly killed in the air strike in Kharkiv.

A western fuel depot was also hit by missiles as Russia continued airstrikes to cut off Ukrainian supply routes. In the past two weeks, missile attacks have also been carried out against fuel storage, military facilities and airfields in Zitomir in the central region and Mikolaiu in the southern part.

As the Russian army concentrated on occupying southern Ukraine, some inside Ukraine are pointing out that Russia is trying to divide Ukraine into North and South just like the Korean Peninsula.

Kirillo Budanou, head of Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence Agency, said in a statement that “they are trying to drag Ukraine into a situation where it is divided into territories occupied by Russia and those not occupied by Russia.”

◆Expert “Russia, focus on one goal at a time due to supply route problem”

Western military analysts and Ukrainian government officials believe that Russian forces suffered significant losses during the month of the invasion, failing to achieve their initial goal of gaining control of key cities such as Kiiu.

Jack Watling, a researcher at the Royal Joint Military Institute in the UK, said: “The supply route problem has forced the Russian army to focus on one objective at a time and move slowly.”

He added, however, that although the Ukrainian army succeeded in ambush and deterrence against the Russian army, it did not significantly overturn the Russian victory.

The Ukrainian side is showing confidence. Ukraine’s National Security Council (NSC) chairman Olegsi Danilov said on the 25th that “there is a counterattack in some regions and it is absolutely productive.”

The Institute of Warfare said in a recent assessment that the Ukrainian military’s tactics were prudent and effective, recapturing small areas of strategic and operational importance without overly expanding counterattacks.
