(Geneva = Yonhap News) Reporter Ahn Hee = Russian President Vladimir Putin recently met with Chinese President Xi Jinping and insisted, in connection with the agreement to strengthen cooperation in the nuclear field, “we will not form a military alliance with China, but only cooperation in the technical field.”

According to the Interfax news agency, President Putin said in an interview with his country’s television broadcast on the 26th (local time), “We will have no military alliance with China.” It’s transparent and there are no secrets,” he said.

“The United States and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) have begun to create a new axis similar to the alliance between Germany, Italy and Japan during the Second World War,” Putin said, adding that efforts to form a global military alliance are being made. made by Western countries as well

Russia and China agreed to strengthen technological cooperation, such as continuing the development of fast neutron reactors (fast breeder reactors) through summit talks during President Xi’s three-day visit to Moscow on the 21st.

A fast breeder reactor is a nuclear reactor that uses fast neutrons to produce energy by causing a nuclear fission reaction. In December last year, Russia’s state nuclear power company Rosatom finished shipping 25 tonnes of highly enriched uranium to China’s first fast breeder reactor, the CFR-600.

Regarding this, the United States and others suspect that the reason China continues to trade highly enriched uranium with Russia is the possibility of cooperation with nuclear weapons. Experts estimate that the CFR-600 could produce fuel for around 50 nuclear warheads a year.

Relations between Russia and China have remained close even after Russia was isolated under Western sanctions following its invasion of Ukraine in February last year.

China not only refused to participate in sanctions against Russia, but also abstained from the United Nations General Assembly resolution condemning Russia’s invasion as a violation of international law.
