Russia leapfrogs Ukraine: Russian troops occupy cities

Kyiv: Overcoming strong resistance from Ukraine, Russian forces captured the Slavic city near Chernobyl in the north. Russia has said it has completed the first phase of its military operation and will focus on the liberation of rebel-held eastern Ukraine.

Slavutic on the Belarusian border is home to workers at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, which was hit by a major nuclear disaster in 1986. Meanwhile, Mayor Vadim Boichenka said the situation in Mariupol was “extremely serious.” The resistance of the Ukrainian army continues to be strong in many parts of the devastated city. More than one lakh people remain in the city. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Selensky has said in a video conference at the Doha Forum in Qatar that Russia’s attempt to completely destroy the port of Mariupol is destructive to the world.
