Russia has decided to build a military base in the west in response to Finland and Sweden’s recent start of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) membership process, AFP news agency reported on the 20th (local time).

According to the AFP news agency, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said in an interview with Russian news agencies that “12 units will be installed in the Western Military District by the end of this year.”

Finland and Sweden submitted their official application for NATO membership to NATO headquarters in Brussels, Belgium on the 18th. Russia has warned that Finland and Sweden will take “corresponding measures” if they join NATO.
