[Oslo, 21st Reuters]–Russia’s state-owned gas giant Gazprom announced on the 21st that it has stopped supplying gas to neighboring Finland. Gazprom Export, the export window, requires European countries to pay for gas in rubles, but Finland refuses.

Prior to this, Finnish gas system operator Gasgrid Finland had announced that it had stopped supplying. The company said, “The gas supply via Imatra (the entry point for Russian gas) has stopped.”

Finnish state gas company Gasum also confirmed that supply had stopped on the 21st. “From today, we will supply natural gas to our customers from other sources through the Baltic Connector Pipeline during the upcoming summer season,” he said. The pipeline connects Estonia and Finland.

Finland relies on Russia for most of its natural gas imports, but its use is only about 5% of the country’s total energy consumption.
