Reuters reported on the 6th that Russia is expected to unveil the ‘Doomsday’ command and control plane in preparation for nuclear war on the 9th (local time) on the Victory Day commemorating the 77th anniversary of the victory in World War II.

According to the Russian Ministry of Defense and others on the same day, President Vlamidir Putin is expected to hold a military parade including tanks, rockets, and intercontinental ballistic missile units at the Red Square in Moscow on the same day. The screening ceremony will include Russia’s supersonic fighters, the Tu-160 strategic bomber, and the IL-80 ‘Doomsday’ commander, which will carry Russia’s highest rank in nuclear war, the Russian Ministry of Defense said.

In particular, the Doomsday commander, which appears on this day, has not been seen at the Victory Day celebrations since 2010, so it is interpreted by the West as President Putin trying to warn of the possibility of a nuclear attack at this event. Russia has continued to threaten nuclear strikes after the invasion of Ukraine, as Western military aid continued.

The Doomsday commander is an aerial command and control device developed by Russia in the 1980s. It was developed for the purpose of evacuating the highest military command, including the president and the defense minister, and maintaining command over the army when the ground command and control center is destroyed in a crisis situation such as an all-out nuclear war. It is equipped with advanced communication equipment and survival facilities inside, and since there are no external windows except for the cockpit, it can withstand a nuclear explosion. Other details are classified as confidential.

The West is also paying close attention to what President Putin’s stance on the war in Ukraine will be on this Victory Day. From this date, the expectation that the war could go to the end of the war and the fear that the conflict could further escalate as it transitions to an all-out war are mixed. However, Russian experts expect Putin to declare an all-out war in his victory section and not announce a massive mobilization order.
