(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Kim Tae-jong = Russia is issuing warning letters one after another, mentioning ‘retaliation’ to Japan, which is the most aggressive in Asia’s sanctions against Russia.

Igor Margulov, deputy minister for Asia-Pacific at the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said on the 26th (local time) that the U.S. and Japan would retaliate if they expand the scale of the joint naval exercise, Reuters reported.

Deputy Minister Margulov said the US-Japan naval exercises near the Russian border are escalating tensions in the region and threaten Russian security.

“We regard these actions by Japan as a threat to our security,” he said. said.

This appears to be due to the recent joint naval exercise that Japan and the United States mobilized aircraft carriers for.

On the 12th, the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Forces conducted a joint exercise with the US nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln to send a warning message to North Korea, which has been caught on the trend of preparing for a nuclear test.

Russia responded by launching cruise missiles two days later against the United States and Japan.

On the 25th, Russia pressured Japan to start developing the so-called Kuril Islands (Northern Territory in Japanese), which is in dispute with Japan.

Yuri Trutnev, Russian Deputy Prime Minister and Representative of the Far Eastern Plenipotentiary Conference, said during a visit to Khabarovsk in the Russian Far East, “Japan will invest in and develop the Kuril Islands, which it falsely claims that we are occupied illegally.”

The Kuril Islands are an island group of 1,300 km stretching between Hokkaido in Japan and Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia, effectively controlled by Russia.

However, Japan claims sovereignty over the four southern islands of Kunashir, Iturup, Habomai Islands, and Shikotan, calling them northern territories.

On the 25th of last month, Russia conducted a large-scale military exercise in the Kuril Islands in the Far East using more than 3,000 troops and hundreds of military equipment.

Japan is actively participating in US-led economic sanctions against Russian aggression.

On the 20th of this month, eight Russian diplomats were expelled, and on the 12th, sanctions were imposed on the two daughters of Russian President Vladimir Putin by freezing the assets.

It is also active in accepting refugees by receiving 524 Ukrainian refugees from the 2nd of last month to the 9th of this month, and reviewing the improvement of the refugee system with additional acceptance in mind.
