There has been an incident over the Black Sea. A Russian fighter jet has intercepted a patrol of the EU border agency Frontex.
According to Romanian reports, a Russian fighter plane intercepted a Polish plane. This was during a patrol flight for the EU border protection agency Frontex. The Romanian Defense Ministry said on Saturday that the Polish plane had been intercepted by a Sukhoi Su-35 fighter jet through repeated “aggressive and dangerous manoeuvres”.
The incident happened “in international airspace over the Black Sea”, about 60 kilometers east of Romanian airspace. The Polish machine “lost altitude at first” and had “serious control problems,” said the Defense Ministry in Bucharest. Romanian and Spanish aircraft were then put on “pre-alert” by NATO. The Polish crew then managed to land safely.
Poland wants to comment on the Frontex incident on Sunday
“This incident is further evidence of the Russian Federation’s provocative actions in the Black Sea,” Bucharest said.
The European border protection agency Frontex initially did not respond to a request from the AFP news agency. Polish border guards declined to comment and announced a statement for Sunday.
The Polish aircraft has been stationed in Romania since April 19 and is scheduled to remain there until May 17. It is part of a Frontex operation organized by Romania, in which Spain and Sweden are also involved.
Bundeswehr intercepted Russian jet over the Baltic Sea
According to the Bundeswehr, two weeks ago fighter jets from the German and British Air Forces intercepted three Russian reconnaissance planes in international airspace over the Baltic Sea. Accordingly, there were two military machines of the type SU-27 and an IL-20. They flew “again without a transponder signal” and were intercepted by Eurofighters from the two NATO allies, the German Air Force said on Twitter.
