Celebrity designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee has pulled out of a controversial Mangalsutra ad following the inclusion of half-naked models. Sabyasachi has been widely criticized on social media for hurting religious sentiments. Following this, Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra came out with a warning that a case would be registered against Sabyasachi. With this, Sabyasachi withdrew the advertisement and expressed regret.
“The Mangalsutra campaign aims to talk about inclusion and empowerment at a time when heritage and culture are under dynamic discussion. We wanted to make this a celebration. But it hurt a section of our society. We are very sad about that. Therefore, the campaign is being withdrawn, ”the company said.
Sabyasachi Jewelery Collection’s new Mangal Sutra advertisement has caused controversy. The semi-nude female and male models were also closely related. Some protested after the ad was shared on social media. The high question was what is the need for nudity to sell jewelry used by women after marriage. It was alleged that this offended religious sentiments and insulted culture. The protest soon turned into a campaign. Demands for boycotting and arresting Sabyasachi also rose.
Narotham Mishra’s response to Sabyasachi’s regret that the campaign was withdrawn was that such a mistake should not be repeated. Mishra said there would be no warning if it was repeated and action would be taken directly.
