Samsung Electronics May Lose Global Smartphone Lead to Apple in the Second Half of the Year
Despite maintaining its dominant position in the global smartphone market during the second quarter, industry experts suggest that Samsung Electronics might trail behind Apple in the upcoming months.
Market research firm TrendForce reports that Samsung Electronics, with a shipment volume of 53.9 million smartphones, secured the top spot in global shipments, accounting for 19.8% of the market share.
However, this figure reflects a decline of 12.4% compared to the previous quarter. Analysts attribute this decrease to a sluggish global market economy and intensified competition.
In the second quarter, the overall global smartphone production amounted to 272 million units, representing a significant 6.6% decline from the first quarter. This contraction indicates that the market’s size has shrunk.
Meanwhile, Apple, with its production of 42 million smartphones, secured the second position in terms of global shipment share (15.4%), just behind Samsung Electronics.
Looking ahead, TrendForce suggests that Apple may surpass Samsung Electronics in the second half of the year, depending on the success of the upcoming iPhone 15 series, set to be released on the 12th.
According to TrendForce, “If the iPhone 15 series exceeds market expectations, Apple is likely to dethrone Samsung Electronics, ending its long-standing reign as the global market leader.”
