Samsung Electronics’ memory semiconductor and electric LEDs are also certified as ‘carbon footprint’

(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Kim Young-shin = Samsung Electronics[005930]announced on the 22nd that after system semiconductors, memory semiconductors and light emitting diode (LED) products have received ‘carbon footprint’ certification.

Following four types of system semiconductor products in September, 20 types of next-generation memory semiconductor products have additionally acquired ‘product carbon footprint’ certification from the Carbon Trust, a non-profit organization established by the British government.

In addition, the successor products of the five memory semiconductors that received product carbon footprint certification last year received ‘carbon reduction certification’, which is given when carbon emissions are actually reduced in the production process.

Samsung Electronics explained that the amount of carbon reduced in the production process of these five products is about 680,000 tons

Samsung Electronics was able to reduce power consumption per product and the amount of raw materials inputted by the next-generation memory chip, which is smaller in size and improved in productivity than the previous generation.

In addition, while improving the power consumption efficiency of the product, the packaging material of some products was changed from plastic to paper packaging to minimize carbon emissions throughout the production and distribution process.

Samsung Electronics’ 4 types of LED package products ‘C-Series’ also received the ‘Carbon Footprint Certification’ from UL, a global certification company for the first time in the industry.

The certified product contributes to the reduction of carbon emissions of existing internal combustion engine vehicles and reduces power consumption, enabling the use of electric vehicle batteries for a longer period of time.

In line with the recent eco-friendly trend in the auto industry, Samsung Electronics plans to continue developing LED products that can reduce carbon emissions from the manufacturing process.
