Samsung Electronics Renews Galaxy Series Trademarks Except for Note… Why?

As Samsung Electronics recently renewed the trademark rights of Galaxy smartphones one after another, the background is notable because only the trademark rights of the Galaxy Note were not renewed.

According to Cypris, a patent information search site on the 9th, Samsung Electronics recently renewed the trademark rights of Galaxy S, Galaxy Z, Galaxy A, and Galaxy M.

However, it was confirmed that the Galaxy Note was omitted from the list.

All other smartphone lineups, such as the flagship smartphone line ‘Galaxy S’, the foldable smartphone line ‘Galaxy Z’, and the mid-to-low-end smartphone lines ‘Galaxy M’ and ‘Galaxy A’, have all filed for trademark registration on the 31st of last month. has been repaired

The trademark is currently being applied for/examined, and the trademark application has been accepted by the Korean Intellectual Property Office and has been assigned an examiner by meeting the requirements for recognition of the filing date.

However, ‘Galaxy Note’, a flagship smartphone line in the second half of the year, cannot be found in the list of newly applied trademarks.

The duration of trademark rights is 10 years from the date of registration. The Galaxy Note was registered as a trademark on September 2, 2011, and registration was decided on April 1, 2013. Accordingly, the expiration date of the Galaxy Note trademark is April 3, 2023. Even if the duration of the trademark has expired, an additional renewal period is given for 6 months.

Because the trademark right and additional renewal period are still left, just because the Galaxy Note is not on this trademark renewal list does not mean that Samsung Electronics has given up the trademark right. In addition, whether or not to apply for a trademark right does not indicate whether the product is directly discontinued.

All other Galaxy brands applied for trademark renewal on the same date, but only the Galaxy Note is missing, and rumors of discontinuation of the note may be raised again.

Regarding the omission of the Galaxy Note in this trademark renewal, a Samsung Electronics official said, “I did not apply because the period for the renewal of the Note trademark has not yet arrived.”

However, while the most recent line, ‘Galaxy Z’, also renewed the trademark, the reason why only the older Galaxy Note did not apply because the trademark renewal period did not arrive remains a question.

In response, a Samsung Electronics official replied, “It is difficult to confirm the details of the trademark registration.”

With the recent Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 being well-received, if the Galaxy Z series successfully fills the void in the Galaxy Note, Samsung Electronics will launch the Galaxy S series in the beginning of every year and the Galaxy Z series in the second half of the year. It is expected that this may be done.

According to Samsung Electronics, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3, released on the 27th of last month, set a record for the first day of pre-launch. About 270,000 units were opened in one day on the first day of opening, and about 920,000 units were booked in advance for 7 days. This is about 1.3 times that of the Galaxy Note 20 and about 1.8 times that of the Galaxy S21.

The reaction is hot not only at home but also abroad. According to Samsung Electronics, 3,000 Galaxy Z Flip 3s were sold out in 3 minutes during a live commerce broadcast held in China, and about 1 million people waiting for pre-orders in China were counted.

It is reported that Samsung Electronics plans to sell 6 million to 7 million units of the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 this year. Compared to the Galaxy Note, which was responsible for sales of about 10 million units a year, the sales volume is lower, but in terms of profitability, it is not impossible to replace.

However, it is known that Samsung Electronics is taking a cautious approach to discontinuing the Galaxy Note because the fan base of the Galaxy Note is thick, there are differences in characteristics between bar-type smartphones and foldable smartphones, and there are price barriers.

At the Samsung Electronics Shareholders’ Meeting held in March, Samsung Electronics President Koh Dong-jin said, “It may be difficult to launch the Galaxy Note this year,” but said, “The release date may be different, but we are working hard to continue the Note next year, and we are not betraying the minds of Note customers. I will do my best to prevent it,” he said, drawing a line on the rumors of discontinuing the Galaxy Note.
