As the first itinerary for US President Joe Biden’s visit to Korea for the Korea-US summit, he visited the Samsung Semiconductor campus in Pyeongtaek with President Yoon Seok-yeol. Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong skillfully welcomed VVIP guests on his home ground and played the role of a civilian diplomat in the diplomatic battles between the two countries.
On the 20th, Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong took on the role of introducing the presidents of the two countries prior to the joint speech held by the ROK-US leaders at Samsung Electronics’ Pyeongtaek campus.
In fluent English, he said, “I am delighted to have many distinguished guests including President Biden and President Yoon Seok-yeol at the Samsung Semiconductor campus in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi-do.
“Samsung Electronics is a global company that started making semiconductors in the United States 25 years ago,” he said.
“Semiconductor is the engine of everything,” said Vice Chairman Lee. “Innovation that provides access to the Internet and access to a database of knowledge is only possible because of your dedication. Dear Samsung, To Team Samsung. Thank you,” he emphasized.
On this day, Vice Chairman Lee sat in the front row of the audience. As the host of the event, Gina Rayman also sat between the U.S. Secretary of Commerce and Kim Seong-han, Chief of Security Affairs at the Blue House. Raymon, who was sitting next to each other before the event, was also caught talking continuously with the Minister of Commerce.
In his speech, President Biden expressed his gratitude several times for Samsung’s investment in the United States.
President Biden said, “I would like to thank Samsung Electronics once again for its pledge in May of last year to invest $17 billion in the United States. Taylor City, Texas, will produce the world’s best semiconductors. I know the plan to establish it,” he said.
Prior to President Biden’s visit around 6 pm on the same day, President Yoon first visited the office building of the Pyeongtaek campus to meet with Vice Chairman Lee. President Yoon Seok-yeol shook hands with Vice Chairman Lee and said, “I should have come sooner.” President Yoon, who was elected president, said that he wanted to tour the factory, saying, “Korea’s pride” and “the heart of the world’s semiconductors,” while seeing the Samsung Electronics semiconductor factory in Pyeongtaek while traveling by helicopter on the 7th. President Yoon’s remarks on this day are interpreted as an extension of these past remarks.
