Los Angeles FC suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat at home to the San Jose Earthquakes on April 19, 2026, at BMO Stadium, marking one of the club’s most disappointing performances of the MLS season. The result not only halted LAFC’s recent momentum but also exposed significant defensive frailties as San Jose capitalized on second-half lapses to secure a convincing away victory.

The Earthquakes struck early through a well-worked team goal in the 18th minute, with midfielder Luis Felipe laying off a pass to Cristian Espinoza, who fired low past LAFC goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau. San Jose doubled their lead just before halftime when Jeremy Ebobisse pounced on a loose ball in the box after a corner was poorly cleared, heading home to make it 2-0. LAFC managed to pull one back through Denis Bouanga in the 55th minute, but the response was short-lived.

San Jose regained their two-goal advantage in the 68th minute when Ebobisse completed his brace, finishing clinically after a swift counterattack initiated by goalkeeper Jonas Ackermann. The final goal came in stoppage time, with substitute Daniel Aguirre sealing the 4-1 scoreline with a composed finish following a defensive mix-up in midfield. The Earthquakes’ second-half surge, which saw them score three goals in 25 minutes, proved decisive.

Defensively, LAFC struggled to contain San Jose’s transitions, particularly down the flanks where full-backs were frequently caught out of position. Crépeau, usually reliable, was at fault for the first goal after misjudging a cross and could not prevent Ebobisse’s second. Head coach Steve Cherundolo acknowledged the shortcomings in his post-match remarks, stating, “We didn’t defend well as a unit, especially after going behind. You can’t concede goals like that and expect to win games at this level.”

The loss leaves LAFC with 34 points from 18 matches, sitting fourth in the Western Conference standings, three points behind second-place Seattle Sounders. San Jose, meanwhile, climbed to 22 points, moving clear of the relegation zone and boosting their hopes of a playoff push. The Earthquakes have now won three of their last five matches, showing improved consistency under head coach Alex Covelo.

Individually, Jeremy Ebobisse was named Man of the Match for his two goals and relentless pressing, while Espinoza’s assist and work rate earned widespread praise. For LAFC, Bouanga’s goal was a brief highlight, but the forward was largely isolated due to poor service from midfield. Timo Werner, who made his first MLS start for LAFC in the match, played 70 minutes before being substituted but failed to register a shot on target, continuing his quiet start to life in Major League Soccer.

Looking ahead, LAFC face a quick turnaround as they prepare to host the Portland Timbers in their next home fixture on April 26. The club will need to address defensive organization and midfield creativity if they are to challenge for top honors in the Western Conference. San Jose, buoyed by the result, travel to face Real Salt Lake on April 27, aiming to build on their recent resurgence.
