Santosh Trophy: Goal rain against Lakshadweep; A successful start for Kerala

Kochi: Kerala (Keralam) got off to a winning start in the Santosh Trophy. Kerala defeated Lakshadweep by five goals at the Kaloor Stadium. Nijo Gilbert, Jasin, S Rajesh and Arjun Jayaraj scored for Kerala. One goal was donated by Lakshadweep.

Kerala took the lead in the fourth minute of the match. Nijo scored for Kerala from the penalty spot. Kerala took the lead in the 12th minute through Jesse. Lakshadweep captain Ubaidullah was later sent off with a red card, making things easier for the hosts. The third goal was donated by Lakshadweep.

Kerala increased the lead to four in the 82nd minute. This time it was Rajesh’s Eelam. Midfielder Arjun Jayaraj completed the roster during the innings.

Kerala’s next matches are against Pondicherry on Friday and the Andamans on Sunday. The winner of the group will advance to the final round.

Kerala came to the tournament with a 22 member team. 13 are newcomers. No change in the coaching staff either. Coach Bino George said he had high hopes for the team, which includes both experienced and newcomers.
