“King of Saudi Arabia Salman bin Abdulaziz invited President Raisi to Riyadh in a letter welcoming the restoration of diplomatic relations between the two countries,” Mohamed Gamjidi, adviser to Iranian President Seyyed Ebrahim Raishi, said on Twitter.

Gamsidi said that President Raisi also welcomed the invitation from Saudi Arabia.

However, the exact schedule of the summit between the two countries was not revealed. Saudi state media has yet to report news about King Abdulaziz’s letter.

The Iranian government announced that it had chosen three places for the summit through consultations at foreign minister level between the two countries and offered them to Saudi Arabia.

Earlier, Iran and Saudi Arabia held secret talks in Beijing, China on the 10th and agreed to normalize diplomatic relations after seven years of diplomatic relations and to reopen mutual embassies within two months.

Diplomatic relations between the two countries were severed in 2016 after Saudi Arabia executed a prominent Shiite cleric over Iranian opposition.

Since then, Saudi Arabia as the suzerain of Sunni Islam and Iran as the leader of Shiites have been in sharp conflict.

Iran supplied weapons to Yemen’s Shia Houthi rebels, and Saudi Arabia supported the Yemeni government by bombarding rebel areas in a proxy war.

According to the agreement, Iran will stop supplying arms to the Houthi rebels.

Following the agreement to normalize diplomatic relations, the summit between the Saudi king and the president of Iran is being pushed forward, and it seems that the relationship between the two countries is growing rapidly closer.

Iran said it was ready to restore ties with Saudi Arabia’s ally Bahrain, which had been severed in the process of cutting diplomatic ties with Saudi Arabia in the past.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdullahian said in a news briefing on the summit with Saudi Arabia that day, “I want to take steps to normalize diplomatic relations with Bahrain as well.”

Bahrain, also a Sunni country, has had an uneasy relationship with Iran since it cut diplomatic ties with Iran in 2016 along with Saudi Arabia.

“Two months ago, working-level delegations from Iran and Bahrain agreed to visit the embassies of both countries,” said Minister Amir Abdullahian.

Bahrain, along with other Arab countries, welcomed Iran and Saudi Arabia when they announced plans to restore diplomatic relations.
