We reported yesterday that a worker in his 30s at SeAH Besteel committed suicide while suffering from workplace harassment and sexual assault.

One day after the report was published, the CEO of SeAH Besteel, which is in charge of the Gunsan plant, and the director in charge of steel production voluntarily resigned.

First, reporter Son Ha-neul covered the story.

Ji Mo, the head of the steelmaking team, printed out nude photos taken at the picnic and showed them to other employees, undressed the new employees saying ‘I’ll do a tattoo test’, and kissed the cheeks at the dinner party.

Another perpetrator who sexually harassed male juniors in the office by touching their genitals, senior Mr. Jo.

Mo Yoo, a 6-year worker at SeAH Besteel’s Gunsan Plant, took his own life in 2018, leaving a note exposing workplace harassment and sexual violence.

One day after the report, SeAH Besteel issued a statement in the name of the CEO in the name of two A4 papers and apologized, saying, “I pray for the well-being of the deceased and send my condolences to the bereaved family.”

“Even though something that should never have happened to be dismissed as an individual deviant happened, the company could not figure it out,” he said.

CEO Park was the general manager of personnel management at the Gunsan plant at the time of Mr. Yoo’s death, and Director Kim was the team leader of Mr. Yoo’s department.

In particular, in the fact-finding report from the management three years ago, Director Kim was advised to ‘release his position’, saying, “I stood by despite recognizing habitual sexual harassment and inappropriate words and actions within the organization.”

The company is planning to hold a personnel committee and dispose of the perpetrators, including class leader Ji and senior Cho, as soon as possible.

SeAH Besteel said, “This afternoon, all executives and employees watched yesterday’s news through videoconference together,” and vowed to change for the future.

In response, the bereaved family said, “It is desirable to take responsibility, but the belated announcement that was made only after the MBC report came out should not end with contempt.”
