Security Council Stability: US support for India | Narendra Modi | Joe Biden

Washington: President Joe Biden has assured that the United States will support India’s stability in the UN Security Council. This was during a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the White House. The Security Council is made up of five permanent members – the US, Russia, the United Kingdom, China and France – and 10 temporary members who change every two years. India needs to change this over time.

Biden praised India’s stance when it led the Security Council in August. Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla said Modi had drawn Biden’s attention to the H1B visa issue facing Indians in the United States. The United States has said it will support India’s membership in the 48-member Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG), which markets global nuclear materials.

When India applied for membership in 2016, China insisted that membership should be granted only to those who had signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. India and Pakistan have not signed the agreement. India welcomes US efforts to tackle climate change and return to the Paris Agreement. The U.S., which withdrew from the Paris Agreement during the Trump administration, returned last February. Both countries recognized the importance of investment in renewable energy projects.
